Raven Software partnered with Id Software and Origin for the first time and began production of ShadowCaster in 1992. The game utilized a hybrid game engine that was created by Id Software's John Carmack as a successor of the Wolfenstein 3-D technology and the predecessor of the DooM engine. Published and released in 1993 by Origin, ShadowCaster revolutionized the first person shooter genre by introducing gamers to jumping, flight and swimming for the first time. ShadowCaster also introduced the first in-world weapon particle effects and paved the way for Raven Software's coming onslaught of first person shooter games.
